Greece and US sign Economic Security Declaration – Joint commitment to promote prosperity

The two countries committed to deepen their cooperation in partnerships that enhance supply chain security and promote the development of reliable technology ecosystems

Newsroom November 7 06:58

The United States and Greece signed a joint Declaration on Economic Security in Athens today, which, the U.S. side stresses, reflects a new geopolitical reality: that economic security is an integral pillar of national security and vice versa.

The two countries pledged to deepen their cooperation in multi-level partnerships that enhance supply chain security, reduce coercive dependencies, and promote the development of reliable technological ecosystems.

The Declaration of Economic Security was signed on the U.S. side by the U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg and U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, and on the Greek side by Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs Charis Theocharis.

The initiative, as the US Embassy in Greece points out, is part of US President Donald Trump’s vision for a new era of economic diplomacy that will enhance peace and security through private investment, entrepreneurship, and economic cooperation.

Undersecretary Hellberg said, “Our allies around the world are seeking to secure their supply chains while seizing the opportunities created by the artificial intelligence revolution. U.S. partners know that prosperity trickles down through every link in the AI supply chain. As the birthplace of this technological revolution, America is an indispensable partner, ready to work with its friends for a better future. Through this historic Declaration, the United States and Greece will implement landmark projects that will define the AI economy for decades to come.”

Ambassador Guilfoyle noted: “It is no coincidence that we chose Greece to launch this important initiative, which reaffirms our commitment to trusted technology and building innovation-based economies. Athens planted the intellectual seed that paved the way for the artificial intelligence revolution we are experiencing today. The United States and Greece are proudly committed to ensuring that our supply chains – and by extension the economies that support our societies – remain secure and resilient, today and in the future.”

Main Commitments of the Declaration

The two sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to promote prosperity, technological progress and economic security, with the aim of, inter alia:

– Strengthening reliable supply chains is necessary to support shared economic growth.

– Promote reliable AI systems that responsibly manage the early development of AI.

– Enabling private initiative to create flagship projects and quality jobs.

– Protecting sensitive technologies and critical infrastructure from unnecessary access or control by countries of concern.

– Ensuring a level playing field through concerted action against state-subsidized excess capacity and unfair dumping practices.

– Developing reliable communication networks, such as ICT systems, fibre optics, and data centres.

– Creating an open and stable investment environment that enhances international trade.
