Djokovic is learning Greek: “I want to have a conversation, it’s a sign of respect”

Speaking to Serbian journalists, Novak Djokovic revealed his desire to improve his Greek language skills

Newsroom November 7 09:16

Top Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, who maintains a close connection with Greece, has expressed his desire to deepen his knowledge of the Greek language.

“I don’t yet have the vocabulary needed for a conversation,” admitted the 38-year-old Serbian star. “It’s just a few words — some basic expressions like: ‘How are you?’, ‘I’m fine, thank you’, ‘Good morning.’”

Djokovic explained that his effort to learn Greek is a gesture of respect toward the country that hosts him:

“I love Greece, and in that sense I’ve learned a little. I believe it’s a fundamental sign of respect toward the host — in this case, the Greek people, who are hosting me and my family. I think it’s important to try to get closer to people.”

The Serbian tennis champion added that, if he finds the time, he would like to be able to hold a proper conversation in Greek, since he loves languages. He also noted that the amount of time he spends in the country will affect how quickly he learns.

Family Gathering in Athens

Djokovic also spoke about the emotional reunion of his entire family in Athens — something that hasn’t happened for quite some time:

“It’s the first time we’re all here. It’s really a wonderful feeling. These are the moments that matter and stay in your memory — the moments you spend with the people closest to you.”
