During his address at the “Green Deal Greece 2025” conference, organized on Wednesday, November 5, by the Technical Chamber of Greece in cooperation with economix.gr for the fifth consecutive year at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Nikos Tsafos highlighted the infrastructure projects that are reshaping Greece’s position on the energy map. The event’s theme was “Green and Digital Transformation, Infrastructure and Sustainable Development at a Critical Juncture: Challenges and Opportunities for Investment and Resilience.”

Speaking during the session on “Energy and Mineral Resources,” Tsafos emphasized that natural gas infrastructure is enhancing Greece’s role as an exporter of energy security across the wider region, while new power plants are adding flexibility to both the national and regional electricity systems.

According to the Deputy Minister, the installed capacity of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) has now more than doubled, reaching 16 GW, with an additional 45 GW awaiting connection terms. “With these figures,” he noted, “Greece ranks seventh globally in clean energy penetration. Since 2020, the country has been a net exporter of electricity, recording a surplus of €122 million last year.”

Tsafos made particular reference to ongoing investments in pumped storage and energy storage, as well as the opening of the market to new investors. “Today, approximately €1.5 billion is being directed to network development and €6 billion to island interconnection projects,” he said, underscoring Greece’s deepening energy integration.

At the same time, energy efficiency initiatives are being supported through Recovery and Resilience Fund programs, while major oil companies such as ExxonMobil and Chevron have expressed strong interest in hydrocarbon exploration. He also noted that a new institutional framework for carbon capture and storage is currently under public consultation, while groundwork is being laid for offshore wind farms and green hydrogen projects.
