Francis Ford Coppola is auctioning off personal items following the box office failure of Megalopolis

This move aims to recoup part of the money he lost from the film’s production

Newsroom October 24 07:58

Francis Ford Coppola is proceeding with the auction of several of his most valuable personal belongings after investing $120 million in his latest movie.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker has put seven watches from his collection up for sale through the auction house Phillips, which will hold the auction on December 6 and 7 in New York. According to People, the move is intended to recover part of the losses from Megalopolis, which cost over $120 million to make but earned only $14.3 million worldwide.

Coppola chose to finance this personal project with his own money rather than working with a studio, and in 2021 he even sold a majority stake in his winery, Inglenook, to the California-based Delicato Family Wines.

At the film’s premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Coppola stated that he “never cared about money” and that his three children “don’t need a fortune.”

Among the watches to be auctioned, one standout piece is a unique design created by Coppola himself in collaboration with renowned watchmaker François-Paul Journe.
