The measure will be introduced in tomorrow’s plenary session for discussion and voting, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is also expected to intervene in support of the proposed measures.

What the Amendment States

The regulation consists of one article, which stipulates that in the area in front of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier — as a site of particular historical and national significance and to safeguard the integrity and intended purpose of the Monument — it is prohibited to:

1. a) Use or occupy the area for any purpose other than visiting the Monument and promoting its significance,

c) Hold any public outdoor gathering, as defined in paragraph 1 of Article 2 of Law 4703/2020 (Government Gazette A’ 131), including spontaneous and extraordinary public outdoor gatherings as defined in paragraphs 4 and 5 of the same Article 2.

2. Anyone violating paragraph 1 shall be punished with imprisonment of up to one (1) year, unless a heavier penalty is provided by another law.

3. The Ministry of National Defense shall take all necessary measures for the maintenance, care, and promotion of the Monument and the area described in paragraph 1, either directly or through the awarding of related contracts.

4. Responsibility for maintaining public order, including enforcement of paragraph 1, lies with the Hellenic Police, in accordance with applicable laws.
