Kaklamanis: Our duty to strive for a free Cyprus, without occupation troops

Speaking at the House of Representatives during his official visit to Cyprus, the President of the House of Representatives spoke with emotion about the victims of Attila

Newsroom September 30 06:04

Nikitas Kaklamanis, Speaker of the Greek Parliament, has sent a strong message of unity for the liberation of occupied Cyprus.

Speaking at the House of Representatives during his official visit to Cyprus, he spoke with emotion about the victims of Attila and the imprisoned graves, the most sacred monument of the Struggle of the Hellenic Cypriots.

“Before I come down from the podium, I want to tell you the shocking experience I just had: because it is one thing to hear about it, another to read about it, and another to go and see it. And while, because of the many personal friends I have in Cyprus, I have been to your island many, many times informally and privately, I had never visited – and this is a shame – the graves of the prisoners. This image has stuck in my mind. And especially the way they were executed,” said Mr. Kaklamanis to add: “I wonder how it is possible that a country of Western civilisation used such ways to kill children, because they were children, 18, 19, 20, 21 years old. After all, they were fighting for the independence of their country. So for these heroes and for the others who fell in Attila, you and we have an obligation to always stand united and strive to achieve the national goal. A free Cyprus, without occupying troops. Thank you very much.”
