Over 1,000 illegal immigrants at the Agia structure in Crete as boats continue to arrive

Over the weekend, boats carrying dozens of illegal immigrants arrived on the southern side of Gavdos - They took selfies as soon as they landed

Newsroom September 15 10:19

The migratory flows of the last two days are causing “suffocation” in Crete, as hundreds of illegal immigrants have reached the island.

According to information from cretapost, throughout the weekend, boats carrying dozens of illegals arrived on the southern coast of Gavdos – just hours apart – with Frontex and the port authorities rushing to rescue them.

Agia at breaking point

As a result, hundreds of migrants were transferred to Agia for temporary accommodation, which has created many problems.

Already, 348 migrants have been staying there for 28 days, and due to stalled procedures, they have not been relocated to other facilities in the country.

The hundreds of migrants are living in miserable conditions, with only two showers and one toilet available. The air conditioning is insufficient for so many people, and there is a looming risk of a public health “time bomb.”

To this number are now added the new migrants who arrived “in rapid succession” over the weekend, bringing the total number of people hosted at the site to more than 1,100!

Selfies of the arrival in Kaloi Limenes

The migratory flows did not stop, especially in Gavdos, but dozens of migrants also arrived at midday in Kaloi Limenes, as reported by Creta24.

About 39 migrants reached Chrysostomos beach on an inflatable boat and disembarked on their own.

In fact, as soon as they set foot on land, they captured the moment by taking selfies.

Authorities in despair

According to cretapost, the agencies responsible for hosting the migrants are in despair.
“The situations we are experiencing are unprecedented and unbelievable. All control has been lost. We are at the mercy of circumstances,” stressed the deputy mayor, Eleni Zervoudaki, adding:
“There are migrants who have been in Agia since August 18, and we do not see the state transferring them to other facilities. Now, with the new influx of migrants, there is a risk that Agia could turn into a health time bomb.”

Scenarios for transferring the migrants

In recent hours, the prevailing scenario is that the situation in Agia may be somewhat eased today, as discussions are underway for several migrants to depart from the facility.

However, the situation remains volatile, with local authorities demanding an immediate solution to the problem that has arisen.
