The Meltemi winds remained strong in the Aegean and eastern mainland on Saturday, with the strongest gust recorded in Penteli at 95 km/h, according to the National Observatory. On Sunday, the weather will be generally clear, although in Epirus, western and central Macedonia, as well as Thessaly, thunderstorms may occur.

On Saturday, northerly winds were strong, and according to the National Observatory of Athens’ automatic weather station network, the strongest gust by around 17:00 was recorded at the summit of Penteli, reaching 95 km/h. The following table lists the 8 stations that recorded the strongest gusts by 17:00 on Saturday, August 16:

Sunday’s Weather

According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS/EMY):

  • Epirus, western and central Macedonia, Thessaly: Partly cloudy with temporary increases at midday and afternoon, bringing local showers and isolated thunderstorms.
  • Thrace: Intermittent cloud cover with local showers until the afternoon.
  • Other regions: Generally clear skies, with temporary cloud cover in mainland areas at midday and afternoon, possibly with local showers in mountainous areas.

Winds:

  • West: west-northwesterly 3–4 Beaufort.
  • East: north-northwesterly 4–6 Beaufort, gradually weakening in the afternoon.

Temperatures:

  • Ionian and mainland: 33–34°C
  • Rest of the islands: 29–31°C

Macedonia & Thrace

  • Weather: Eastern Macedonia & Thrace: partly cloudy with local showers in Thrace until afternoon. Other areas: partly cloudy at midday/afternoon, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms.
  • Winds: West: variable 3–4 Beaufort; East: northeasterly 4–5 Beaufort, weakening from midday.
  • Temp: 20–34°C (Western Macedonia: 17–30°C).

Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Sterea, Western Peloponnese

  • Weather: Epirus: partly cloudy with local showers and isolated thunderstorms in midday/afternoon. Other regions: generally clear with some clouds and local showers in mountains.
  • Winds: Variable 3–4 Beaufort; turning west-northwest in the afternoon.

Thessaly, Eastern Sterea, Evia, Eastern Peloponnese

  • Weather: Thessaly: partly cloudy with local showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly in mountains, at midday/afternoon. Elsewhere: mostly clear with temporary clouds inland and possible local showers in mountains.
  • Winds: Northerly 4–5 Beaufort, locally up to 6 near Evia in the morning; variable 3–4 at night.

Cyclades & Crete

  • Weather: Mostly clear.
  • Winds: North-northwesterly 4–6 Beaufort, weakening from the afternoon.

East Aegean Islands & Dodecanese

  • Weather: East Aegean: some clouds, locally increased in the north until early afternoon. Dodecanese: mostly clear.
  • Winds: East Aegean: northerly 4–6 Beaufort, weakening from afternoon. Dodecanese: west-northwesterly 4–6 Beaufort.
  • Temp: 23–30/31°C.

Outlook

Monday, August 18
Generally clear nationwide, with temporary clouds in the morning in the west and north. From midday, clouds will develop over the Ionian and mainland with local showers and thunderstorms, ending by night. Winds: west-northwest 3–4 Beaufort, up to 5 at sea. Temps unchanged: 33–34°C inland, 31–32°C in Ionian/Crete, 28–31°C in other islands.
