Ministry of Transport: Drone use prohibited in areas affected by wildfires

Uncontrolled flights can interfere with critical aerial firefighting operations

Newsroom August 14 01:27

The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) has issued and published a Safety Bulletin for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drones).

The bulletin has been sent to more than 12,000 drone operators in Greece—both domestic and foreign—in order to rapidly and widely disseminate essential information for their safe operational use.

Given the increased frequency of wildfires, especially in forested areas, the HCAA reminds the public that drone use in wildfire-affected areas is prohibited unless prior authorization and coordination with the competent authorities has been obtained. Uncontrolled drone flights can obstruct vital aerial firefighting operations and endanger human lives.

Particular caution is also advised regarding strong local winds, which can significantly influence the speed and direction of a fire’s spread, increasing the risk for both ground and aerial firefighting forces.

The HCAA has already authorized the use of drones for wildfire prevention and detection. These drones, operating under the Civil Protection Authority, are deployed at around 150 locations across Greece, significantly enhancing early detection and response to fires.

Drone operators are urged to carefully study the HCAA’s Safety Bulletin and to consistently follow its instructions and recommendations, thereby contributing to higher safety standards and the protection of the natural environment.
