40°C heatwave hits Thessaly, Eastern Sterea, and the Peloponnese – Marginal temperature drop by Friday

Thessaly, Eastern Sterea, and the Peloponnese recorded the highest temperatures on Thursday, July 17.

According to data from the National Observatory of Athens (meteo.gr), the highest temperature was observed in Stylida, Fthiotida, at 40.3°C, followed by Skala in Messinia (40.1°C) and Thebes (39.8°C).

The map below illustrates the distribution of maximum temperatures across Greece, highlighting the eight weather stations that recorded the highest values. White circles indicate stations where the temperature exceeded 37°C. In total, 206 out of 535 active weather stations (~38%) recorded temperatures above 35°C, while 58 stations (~11%) surpassed 37°C.

Friday’s Forecast – National Meteorological Service

General Weather:
Skies will remain mostly clear throughout the day. However, localized cloud cover is expected to develop over mainland areas during midday and afternoon hours, bringing light rain in mountainous regions and isolated thunderstorms, particularly in the northern highlands.

Winds:
Moderate, blowing from the north in northern Greece and from the west in southern areas, ranging from 3 to 5 Beaufort.

Temperatures:

  • Northern Greece: Cooler, with highs between 32–34°C.
  • Southern mainland: Up to 35–37°C.
  • Islands: Between 32–35°C.

Macedonia & Thrace

  • Weather: Mostly clear with some cloud buildup in mountainous areas.
  • Winds: Northerly 3–5 Beaufort, becoming variable (3–4 Beaufort) in the afternoon.
  • Temperature: 19–34°C.

Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Sterea, Western Peloponnese

  • Weather: Generally clear.
  • Winds: West to northwest, 3–5 Beaufort.
  • Temperature: 20–36°C, slightly cooler (by 3–4 degrees) in Epirus and the Ionian Islands.

Thessaly, Eastern Sterea, Evia, Eastern Peloponnese

  • Temperature: 21–30°C.
