US aircraft carrier Nimitz heads toward the Middle East amid Israel-Iran tensions

Vessel currently navigating the Malacca strait

Newsroom June 16 07:50

The USS Nimitz, one of the US Navy’s most powerful aircraft carriers, is en route to the Middle East, reportedly in response to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. According to real-time tracking data from MarineTraffic, the Nimitz, which had previously been operating in the South China Sea, has changed course and is now sailing west.

At present, the carrier is passing through the Strait of Malacca, located between Sumatra (Indonesia) and Malaysia, one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors.

US Navy Silent on Mission Details

When contacted by Agence France-Presse (AFP), the US Navy declined to comment on the carrier’s movements or the mission’s objectives.

Scheduled Vietnam Visit Canceled

The Nimitz was originally scheduled to dock for a four-day visit in Da Nang, central Vietnam, including a reception on board on Friday, June 20. However, this visit has been canceled. A Vietnamese government official informed AFP, citing a letter from the US Embassy that referenced an “urgent operational need” invoked by the US Department of Defense as the reason for the abrupt cancellation.

The sudden redeployment of the USS Nimitz comes as regional tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, following recent military escalations between Iran and Israel, fueling concerns of a broader conflict.
