Weather conditions in Greece – High alert until Sunday

Challenging weather conditions through the end of the week

Newsroom June 10 08:58

According to meteorologist Nikoleta Ziakopoulou, Greece will experience difficult weather conditions through the weekend, increasing the risk of wildfires.

“Explosive Mix” of Weather Conditions

  • Strong northern winds (Bοριάδες): Speeds reaching 6–7 Beaufort, with gusts up to 8–9 in the eastern and southern Aegean.
  • High temperatures: Especially affecting western Greece, southern inland areas, Attica, and Lesvos.
  • Severe drought: Extremely dry soil, creating ideal conditions for fire outbreaks.
  • These factors combined create a high-risk situation through Sunday in fire-prone regions.

Wednesday Weather Forecast (June 11)

  • Macedonia: Partly cloudy with local showers or isolated thunderstorms, mainly in mountainous areas during the afternoon.
  • Rest of Greece: Mostly clear with some clouds inland during the afternoon.
  • Winds: Northern, 3–5 Beaufort, locally 6 in the eastern mainland and 7 in the Aegean Sea.
  • Temperatures:
    • Cyclades: Up to 28°C
    • Mainland: Between 31–34°C
    • Western inland regions: Up to 35–36°C

Regional Highlights

  • Attica (Athens): Sunny, winds north 4–6 Beaufort, temperatures 20–34°C
  • Thessaloniki: Partly cloudy with possible afternoon showers or storms, 20–33°C
  • Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Greece: Sunny, some afternoon mountain storms possible, max 36°C
  • Cyclades and Crete: Clear skies, winds up to 7 Beaufort, temperatures 28–33°C
  • Eastern Aegean and Dodecanese: Clear, north to northwest winds up to 7 Beaufort, max 33°C

Outlook for the Coming Days

  • Thursday, June 12: Generally clear, with some afternoon rain in mountainous mainland areas. Strong winds continue. Temperatures steady.
  • Friday, June 13: Mostly sunny, with a slight temperature drop in northern regions.
  • Saturday, June 14: Partly cloudy, local showers. Slight cooling in eastern parts of the country.
  • Sunday, June 15: Mostly clear, with some inland clouds and light rain. Winds stay strong.

The combination of heat, strong winds, and drought creates very high fire risk conditions across Greece, especially in vulnerable areas. Authorities are urging continued vigilance through Sunday, June 15.
