Mountaineer who fell into a ravine in Drama found dead

Earlier, the unfortunate man was found unconscious – He was airlifted by a Super Puma helicopter

Newsroom June 10 01:07

The mountaineer who fell into a ravine on a mountain in Drama on Sunday afternoon has been found dead. He was located unconscious shortly before 9 a.m. today.

Earlier, a Super Puma helicopter managed to reach the spot where the mountaineer had been moved by EMAK (Special Disaster Response Unit) personnel. The man ended up in the ravine after being pushed by a bear that attacked him and his friend while they were climbing towards the old fighter plane of the Hellenic Air Force, which had crashed around 77 years ago in the Frakto forest.

An ambulance picked up the mountaineer and initially transported him to the military airport of Chrysoupoli, from where another ambulance took him to the Kavala hospital.

It is noted that the area where the incident occurred is extremely inaccessible, with dense forest and steep terrain.

A total of 37 EMAK firefighters took part in the operation to locate and transport the mountaineer.

On Monday, rescuers who reached the site of the incident found one of the two men alive. He had climbed a tree to protect himself. Once the danger had passed, he alerted emergency services by calling 112 to request help. According to reports, he was among the first to descend into the ravine, which is over 500 meters deep, in an attempt to locate his friend and climbing companion. He managed to reach a depth of 25 meters but found no trace of him.

Efforts to locate the man who had fallen into the ravine continued throughout the night, with rescuers descending as deep as 300 meters, but they had to stop due to darkness and dangerous conditions.
