Trump declared “war” on Bezos – Anger over reports that Amazon will list the cost of tariffs on its products

A rift in the US president's relations with the billionaire businessman, who supported him both during the pre-election and after the elections - However, Trump's "games" with tariffs have cost Bezos several billion dollars

Newsroom April 29 05:01

“War” with Amazon of Jeff Bezos is being opened by the Trump administration in the United States, following reports that the company will begin displaying the additional cost of tariffs on products on its platform. White House press secretary, Caroline Levitt, called the move a “hostile political act.”

The website Punchbowl News reported earlier Tuesday that Amazon will soon begin “displaying the amount of a product’s cost that comes from tariffs right next to the total price of the product.” The move will directly show American consumers how Trump’s tariffs affect the cost of products.
However, it threatens to undermine the goodwill the company and its founder, Jeff Bezos, have shown toward the Trump administration since the election season.

“This is a hostile act of a political nature by Amazon, Levitt said at a White House press conference, noting that she had discussed the issue with Trump earlier Tuesday morning.

He even referred to a 2021 Reuters report about a partnership between Bezos’s e-commerce company and a “China propaganda organ, while urging Americans to “buy American.”

“This is one more reason why Americans should buy American products, one more reason why we are moving critical supply chains here at home to strengthen our critical supply chain and strengthen our production here, Levitt said.

Shares of Amazon opened down more than 1% on Tuesday morning after those comments.

Levitt declined to comment on what the move portends for the relationship between Trump and the billionaire Amazon founder, who has actively worked to cultivate a relationship with the president in his second term, congratulating him on his election in November and dining at the White House. In addition, Amazon had donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund.

The US president recently praised Bezos, telling The Atlantic magazine in an interview published Monday: “He’s 100 percent. He’s great.”However, according to Bloomberg, Bezos’ net worth has declined by a few billion since the beginning of the year as a result of Trump’s pricing policies.
