Easter basket and godparents’ basket: When they come into effect

Varvakeios and Supermarkets have made their orders for the increased demand of the coming days, while preparing for the "Easter basket"

Newsroom April 1 12:00

Varvakeios Market and supermarkets have already placed their orders to meet the increased demand of the coming days, while preparations are also underway for the “Easter Basket.”

The “Easter Basket” and the “Godparents’ Basket” will officially launch on April 9, with consumers already beginning to compare prices in preparation for their holiday shopping.

The Easter Basket will remain in effect until Holy Saturday, April 19, and will “traditionally” include lamb, goat, tsoureki (Greek Easter sweet bread), chocolate Easter eggs, and other chocolate-based products.

It’s worth noting that this will be the third consecutive year the Easter Basket is implemented, as a temporary extension of the ongoing “Household Basket” initiative.

The official decision regarding the Godparents’ Basket is also expected soon. It will include categories such as: Easter candles (lambades), toys, board games and puzzles, dolls and dollhouses, role-playing accessories, baby toys, action figures, building and creative playsets (e.g. building blocks), vehicles/remote-controlled toys, electronic toys, sports toys (e.g. balls, kids’ basketball hoops and goals), plush toys, musical toys, chocolate eggs, and similar optional items.

At the same time, market inspections are intensifying, and an action plan is being developed to contain the prices of lamb and goat ahead of Easter.

As part of this effort, a meeting was recently held between Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos and Minister of Rural Development and Food Kostas Tsiaras at the Ministry of Development.

The ultimate goal is to protect consumers and support Greek production through targeted actions that prevent unjustified price hikes and profiteering.
