Greece: Major sports Infrastructure overhaul: 100 projects in progress

Greek sports facilities are getting a much-needed facelift, with the government rolling out an ambitious modernization plan that includes 100 infrastructure upgrade projects across the country

Newsroom March 12 07:30

The reopening of the long-abandoned Olympic Village swimming pool in Acharnes after 21 years is just one highlight of this nationwide effort.

Investing in the Future of Sports

According to government sources, the projects aim to support both professional and amateur sports by revitalizing neglected venues. More than €50 million has been allocated from the Public Investment Program to fund these initiatives, ensuring a sustainable future for Greek athletics.

Among the most anticipated projects set to be inaugurated within the next two months are:

  • The Twin Olympic Training Gyms in Paiania – Both the indoor track and fencing facilities have undergone extensive renovations, including refurbished training spaces and upgraded accommodations. A second phase of interventions, expected to be completed by the end of 2026, will introduce new synthetic track surfaces, perimeter fencing, and enhancements to the surrounding area.
  • The New High-Tech Sports Performance Lab at OAKA – The National Center for Sports Research (E.K.A.E.) has been completely revamped, now featuring state-of-the-art equipment with a focus on sports physiology and biomechanics.

Nationwide Upgrades for Local Sports

In addition to major venues, grassroots sports facilities are also receiving a boost. The energy-efficient renovation of 32 football fields across 19 regional units, with a total budget of €806,000, has already been completed. Next in line are 10 indoor basketball courts, with upgrades planned in collaboration with local authorities.

Olympic Village Gets a Second Life

The Olympic Village is seeing substantial improvements, with several key upgrades set to be finalized in the coming weeks. A thermal insulation cover will soon be installed over the renovated swimming pool, locker rooms will be expanded and modernized by the end of spring, and new electronic timing systems will be fitted in both indoor arenas within the next month. Looking further ahead, a brand-new track surface will be laid down by the end of next year, along with energy efficiency upgrades across the entire facility.

Strategic Planning for Greek Sports

With ongoing and completed works at OAKA, the Kaftanzoglio Stadium, and other major venues exceeding €125 million in total investments, Greece is taking a data-driven approach to sports development. The introduction of the e-Kouros digital platform is set to revolutionize sports administration by centralizing data on all sports organizations and facilities nationwide. Government officials are even considering annual reports based on e-Kouros data to ensure transparency and continued investment where it’s needed most.

With this wave of infrastructure improvements, Greece is positioning itself as a serious player in international sports, ensuring that athletes—both aspiring and elite—have the facilities they need to thrive. The message is clear: Greek sports are getting stronger, one upgrade at a time.
