Greece pledges humanitarian and cultural support to Palestine

Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to humanitarian aid and cultural cooperation with Palestine during her visit to Ramallah, where she held meetings with Palestinian officials

Newsroom March 5 07:00

As part of Greece’s initiatives to support the Palestinian people, Mendoni announced that humanitarian aid would be sent to the region, while children from Gaza requiring medical care would be transferred and treated in Greece. These commitments were made during her discussions with Palestinian Authority Minister of Culture Imad Hamdan and Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Hani Al-Hayek.

Mendoni also visited the Yasser Arafat State Museum, where she was given a tour by its director, Mohammad Halaika. In talks, both sides explored opportunities for cultural exchanges, including literary translations between Greek and Arabic, as well as collaboration in music, theater, and traditional crafts. The Greek minister emphasized shared artistic traditions, such as embroidery and olive tree symbolism in folk heritage, while expressing Greece’s willingness to host exhibitions featuring Palestinian artists.

During her meeting with Minister Al-Hayek, discussions centered on the protection of Palestine’s cultural heritage, particularly Byzantine and Christian monuments. Al-Hayek presented a list of historical sites damaged in the ongoing conflict, requesting Greece’s expertise in their restoration and conservation. Mendoni responded positively, affirming Greece’s commitment to training Palestinian conservators.

Accompanied by Al-Hayek, Mendoni also conducted an on-site inspection of the early Christian Basilica of St. Stephen in Ramallah, a site under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

Her visit was supported by a delegation of Greek heritage specialists, including senior officials from the Greek Ministry of Culture, as well as the Greek Consul General in Jerusalem, Dimitris Angelosopoulos.
