Greece on strike on February 28th: What to expect

Hellenic Train services suspended, flights canceled, pharmacies in Athens closed, ferries docked at ports

Newsroom February 21 06:49

On Friday, February 28th, Greece will be brought to a standstill as a result of a 24-hour strike called by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE), the Civil Servants’ Confederation (ADEDY), and PAME. This nationwide protest marks the second anniversary of the tragic railway disaster in Tempi. Several unions have announced their participation in the strike, which will affect various sectors.

Demands for Justice and Safety GSEE and ADEDY are demanding that:

  • The rule of law be upheld,
  • There be no cover-up or compromise,
  • Those responsible for the tragedy, regardless of their position, be held accountable,
  • Transport systems—land, air, and sea—be properly safeguarded to prevent further tragedies and protect public safety.

Transportation Disruptions No Train Services Due to the 24-hour strike by railway workers, no trains will run across Greece on February 28th, according to Hellenic Train.

Ferries Grounded Ferries will be docked at ports as the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) has announced their participation in the strike. The PNO will stage a nationwide 24-hour strike on February 28th from 00:01 to 24:00. They have also announced legal actions and will issue a press release regarding the tragic accident in Tempi and ongoing concerns about the safety of maritime transport.

Flight Cancellations Air traffic controllers will join the strike organized by ADEDY. As a result, Aegean Airlines has announced the cancellation of all scheduled flights on February 28th, except for a few select flights with modifications. The following flights will operate with the updated schedules:

  • A3909 Larnaca-Athens (February 28, 2025) at 23:30
  • A3910 Athens-Larnaca (March 1, 2025) at 00:00
  • A3898 Athens-Yerevan (March 1, 2025) at 00:15
  • A3930 Athens-Cairo (March 1, 2025) at 00:00

Further cancellations and modifications will affect flights on February 27th and March 1st. Passengers affected by these changes will be notified by the airline.

Taxi Strike The Panhellenic Federation of Taxi Owners (POEIATA) has announced a three-hour strike on February 28th, from 10:00 to 13:00, in memory of the victims of the Tempi disaster. They are calling for justice for the victims and urging all member associations to participate in local events.

Pharmacy Closures in Athens The Athens Pharmaceutical Association (FSA) will also participate in the strike by closing pharmacies for three hours, from 11:00 to 14:00. The association is supporting the call of the families of the victims and encourages all pharmacists to attend the memorial gathering on that day.

EKAB Workers Join the Protest The Panhellenic Federation of EKAB Personnel has also announced their participation in the strike. They emphasize the importance of seeking justice for the victims of the Tempi railway disaster and demand accountability for those responsible for the tragedy.

Theater and Nightlife Closures Several theaters and nightclubs will be closed on the night of February 28th, as a mark of respect for the victims of the Tempi accident.

Public Transport Currently, there are no official announcements regarding disruptions to public transport (buses, trolleybuses, metro, ISAP, suburban trains). However, it is possible that only specific routes will be operating to accommodate those attending protests in central Athens.

Free Medical Exams for Young People In honor of the victims of the Tempi tragedy, the Panhellenic Medical Association has called on doctors to offer free medical services to young people aged 16-30 on February 28th. The association aims to honor the memory of the victims, particularly the young lives lost in the deadly train accident, and demand justice for their families.
