Public Onassis Schools: Criterion introduced, what applies to teachers

Admission to the Public Onassis Schools is also facilitated for the younger siblings of students already attending the educational units that will be transformed into D.M.O.S.

Newsroom January 28 01:00

Support for the students of the municipalities where the District Onassis Schools (D.M.O.S.) will operate, support for their younger siblings, and for the teachers who teach in the schools that will become D.M.O.S, provides for several provisions that were tabled last night, Monday 28 January, in the Convention on the Establishment of Public Onassis Schools, which is being ratified by the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports.

In detail, according to an update from the ministry, an amendment with four new parameters has been added to the contract between the Greek State and the Onassis Foundation:

Α) Introduction of a locality criterion for the final placement of students in the Public Onassis Schools at a minimum rate of 40% to 60%. The locality will be determined based on the student’s place of residence concerning the headquarters of the Public Secondary School to strengthen the areas around the Public Secondary Schools

B)Admission to the Public Onassis Schools is facilitated for the younger siblings of students already attending the educational units that will be transformed into DHMO. The relevant regulation, which will apply for the first two years, also applies to the Experimental Schools and provides for the possibility of admitting younger siblings, even if they have not achieved the required score until the maximum number of students is reached.

C) Teachers and assistant principals of schools that will be transformed into DHSs may remain in their positions for two years, with the guarantee of the organic nature of the positions. They are provided the opportunity to remain after two years, subject to the successful completion of training programs. A four-year transition period is also provided so that principals, assistant principals, and teaching staff can obtain the enhanced qualification of B-level certification of training in information and communication technologies.

D) The Minister of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports shall determine by February 17, 2025, the order in which all of the new Onassis Public Schools will operate.
