Spain: Three ministers announce they are leaving X

"There is no room for a confrontation of views", they argue

Newsroom January 21 05:00

Three Spanish ministers, including Yolanda Diaz, the labor minister and third in command in the government of socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, announced today that they are leaving the social media X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, which they describe as a tool of “propaganda (…) where there is no room for debate”.

For Diaz, who comes from the left-wing Sumar coalition, X “is no longer a communication tool or a social media, but a propaganda mechanism that uses its algorithm to prioritise certain ideas over others and thus influence public opinion”.

In a final message posted on her account, she assesses that on X “there is no room for a debate of opinions” and urges subscribers to rejoin her on other social media, such as Bluesky or TikTok.

Youth Minister Shira Rego and Culture Minister Ernest Urthasun, also members of Sumar, have also announced that they are stopping using X.

For the latter, this social media has “become the mouthpiece of a far-right oligarchy and its tentacles that encourage hatred and misinformation.”

These announcements were made the day after the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, a friend of Ilon Musk. The owner of X, who is also the head and founder of Tesla, has been tasked by Trump to cut US government spending.

On Friday, Spanish ecological associations such as Greenpeace Spain, as well as the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), which brings together the heads of these higher education institutions, had already announced their withdrawal from X.
