China urges U.S. to adopt a reasonable stance on TikTok ban

China has urged the US to heed “the voice of reason” regarding the ongoing TikTok issue, following the enforcement of a law banning the app on U.S. soil.

“We hope the U.S. side will listen to the voice of reason and provide an open, fair, and impartial trade environment for businesses from all countries operating in the U.S.,” stated Mao Ning, spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry, during a press briefing.

Mao highlighted TikTok’s positive impact in the United States, describing the app as “highly regarded among American users” and noting its longstanding presence in the country. “TikTok plays a constructive role in promoting employment and stimulating consumption in the U.S.,” she added.

TikTok operations in the U.S. resumed on Sunday, just hours after a suspension that had sparked political controversy. The platform, which boasts over 170 million users in the U.S., was immediately inundated with celebratory videos marking its return—a testament to its enduring popularity.

The suspension and subsequent restoration came as Donald Trump prepared to be sworn in as president. On Sunday, Trump announced his intention to issue an executive order suspending the enforcement of the TikTok ban upon taking office.

The legislation behind the ban, passed last year, includes a 90-day grace period for TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to find a U.S. buyer. This provision offers an alternative to an outright ban, allowing the app to potentially continue its operations under new ownership.
