Army official Vadim Sukharevsky did not provide further details in his first official statements about the weapon's existence

Ukraine has a laser weapon that can shoot down air targets at an altitude of more than two kilometers, the commander of the country’s unmanned aircraft forces announced today.

Army official Vadim Sukharevsky did not provide further details in his first official statements about the weapon’s existence.

Reuters was unable to confirm his statements.

“Today we can now shoot down an aircraft flying at an altitude of more than two kilometers with this laser,” he reportedly said, according to the Ukrainian news agency Interfax-Ukraine.

Sukharevsky said that the laser weapon is called “Trizub” – the Ukrainian name for the trident and the symbol of the Ukrainian army – suggesting that it is domestically made.

In April, Britain’s former defence minister, Grant Shaps, had said that the British DragonFire laser, which is expected to enter service in 2027, could potentially be used in Ukraine to counter Russian drones.
