Mitsotakis in Lebanon today for a highly symbolic visit

He will be the first Prime Minister to be there a few days after the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire - Who he will meet

Newsroom December 16 11:00

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is heading to Lebanon today, following the recent postponement of his trip due to damage to the prime minister’s aircraft.

Mitsotakis, after all, will be the first prime minister to be there a few days after the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire, and he doesn’t want to miss the opportunity to send out a powerful symbolism.

As scheduled, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will have meetings with Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and is expected to reiterate Greece’s readiness to assist in strengthening Lebanon’s state structures – including the Armed Forces, which play a crucial role in implementing the ceasefire. The Prime Minister will also have a meeting with the Greek community in Lebanon, which has experienced the horrors of the bombings firsthand.

According to protothema.gr, before finalizing his decision to go to Lebanon, Mitsotakis also had contact with the Israeli side, given the close and strategic nature of the relations between Greece and Israel.

In any case, with his presence, the Prime Minister wants to send the message that Greece is also in favour of a ceasefire in the region, even if it seems fragile and difficult to maintain. At the same time, Mitsotakis argues that the model of the agreement applied in the case of Lebanon should be adopted in the case of Gaza, in order to stop the humanitarian tragedy.
