Iranian President plans visit to Moscow “in the near future”

Moscow is preparing to sign a new bilateral agreement with Tehran, which will include closer defense cooperation

Newsroom December 3 02:50

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced that preparations are underway for a visit to Russia by Iranian President Masoud Pezeskyan, though the exact timing remains unclear.

Peskov noted that it is uncertain whether the visit will occur this year, but if necessary, a date could be set quickly.

“Such a visit is being prepared; preparations are in progress,” Peskov told reporters during a routine briefing when asked about the matter.

Moscow is gearing up to sign a new bilateral agreement with Tehran, featuring enhanced defense cooperation—a type of agreement often personally signed by President Putin with his counterparts from other nations.

At the end of October, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on state television that the treaty would be signed “in the near future.”

The military ties between Moscow and Tehran are a growing concern for the West, particularly as Russia continues its military operations in Ukraine and seeks support from allies like Tehran.

On Monday, President Putin and his Iranian counterpart discussed the escalating situation in Syria during a phone call, with Pezeskyan pledging to work with Moscow to resolve the crisis.
