Donald Trump: raises tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada – No one will win the trade war, Beijing responds

The president-elect promised a massive increase in tariffs on products from these countries, starting from the first day of his administration

Newsroom November 26 03:16

President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to impose massive tariff hikes on products from Mexico, Canada, and China, starting on his first day in office. This move, he claims, aims to address illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the United States.

“On January 20, as one of my first executive orders, I will sign all necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on all products imported into the U.S. from Mexico and Canada,” Trump announced on Truth Social. “These tariffs will remain in place until drug trafficking, especially fentanyl, and illegal immigration, which is an invasion of our country, are stopped!”

Tariffs on China

Trump also announced a 10% tariff on all goods from China, on top of existing tariffs, unless Beijing halts the flow of illegal drugs into the US. He noted that despite prior discussions, Chinese officials have failed to deliver on promises to crack down on drug traffickers.

Responses from Canada and Mexico

Canadian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, emphasized the country’s commitment to border security and called for continued dialogue. Similarly, Mexico has long been a target of Trump’s rhetoric on immigration and drug issues.

Beijing Warns of Trade War

China labeled the tariff threats as “irresponsible,” warning that a trade war would harm all parties involved. Beijing asserted that it has implemented stringent measures against drug trafficking and criticized the U.S. for overlooking its domestic challenges with fentanyl.

Trump’s plans have sparked concerns over rising consumer costs, strained trade relations, and a potential escalation in global economic tensions.
