Beatles: The four actors in line to portray the iconic band

Sam Mendes to direct four unique biographical films highlighting each member's perspective

Newsroom November 21 09:20

Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Joseph Quinn, and Barry Keoghan are the four actors rumored to take on the roles of the Beatles in a groundbreaking series of biographical films.

Back in June, Vogue reported that Paul Mescal, star of Gladiator 2, was slated to portray Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson was pegged for John Lennon, and Barry Keoghan was eyeing the role of Ringo Starr. Meanwhile, Charlie Rowe was initially set to play George Harrison, though recent updates suggest Joseph Quinn has now taken on the role.

International outlets have confirmed that Quinn, known for his breakout role in Stranger Things, will step into the shoes of the legendary musician in Sam Mendes’ upcoming series of films dedicated to the Beatles.

This ambitious project, first announced by Mendes in early 2024, offers a unique twist on biographical storytelling. Instead of a single narrative, the British director plans to craft four separate films, each exploring the same events from the perspective of one band member.

In a statement released during the announcement, the approach was described as “innovative and groundbreaking,” with specific release details to follow closer to the premiere.

Historic Authorization

This marks the first time the Beatles and Apple Corps have granted permission for the full life stories of the members and their music rights to be adapted into scripted works. The project has been greenlit with the approval of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison.

Speaking to Variety in October, Mendes shared: “I have this massive Beatles project that will keep me busy for the next few years. So this is probably the last you’ll see of me until mid-2028.”

Quinn as Harrison: The Confirmation

Last month, The Sun broke the story of Quinn’s casting as George Harrison. A source close to the project said: “Joe is an incredible actor. It’s a huge role, but Sam is thrilled to have him on board.”

Now, InSneider has corroborated The Sun’s report, adding that Mendes plans to hire a distinct screenwriter for each of the four films to give each story its own unique texture and perspective.

Peter Straughan is rumored to be penning Harrison’s story, while Kristy Wilson-Cairns has reportedly signed on for one of the other scripts.

Paul Mescal’s Excitement

In a recent GQ interview, Mescal addressed the speculation, admitting: “I would love to be part of Mendes’ biopics.” While confirming that nothing is finalized, Mescal left the door open for further developments.

In another interview with ET, Mescal added: “It would be an incredible story to be part of. With Sam Mendes directing, it’d truly be a dream come true.”

Initially scheduled for a mid-2027 release, Mendes’ revelation about the demanding nature of the project suggests audiences may have to wait until 2028 to see these ambitious films hit the big screen.
