Athens Marathon: Pitsoilis wins – Which roads are closed and until when

The athlete from G.A.S. Ilissos finished in 2:18:56 – Second place went to Panagiotis Karaiskos and third place to Giorgos Menis – The first woman was Noula from Iraklis – The last runner is expected to finish by 17:42 – Detailed traffic regulations below.

Today, the 41st Authentic Athens Marathon, with the classic 42.195 km route, marks the climax of the great sports celebration. The capital has been bustling with excitement, as nearly 21,000 runners from 152 countries have gathered.

The big winner with a time of 2:18:56 was Charalambos Pitsoilis from G.A.S. Ilissos, who returned to first place after two years.

In second place was last year’s winner, Panagiotis Karaiskos from Iraklis, with 2:19:50, while Giorgos Menis, an athlete from Palaio Faliro, placed third with a time of 2:21:40.

Charalambos Pitsoilis won after making a dramatic comeback in the final kilometers. He started at a more moderate pace in the historic race and, at the halfway point, was in fourth place with a time of 1:09:48. At the 30 km mark, Panagiotis Karaiskos was leading, with Pitsoilis trailing by about 40 seconds. As he reached the Megaron Music Hall, Pitsoilis made his move, passing Karaiskos, and with an intense pace, entered the Panathenaic Stadium to cheers and crossed the finish line.

At the finish line, emotional moments unfolded as Pitsoilis waited for the next two athletes and embraced them.

The event features the classic 42.195 km route, concluding at the Panathenaic Stadium. The city of Athens has prepared for this grand athletic celebration, welcoming participants from 152 countries. Significant traffic restrictions have been implemented along the marathon route, affecting several main roads. Additionally, there are adjustments in the operation of the Metro to accommodate the event.

Due to the 41st Athens Authentic Marathon, traffic regulations are in effect along the entire route today, Sunday, November 10, 2024.

To ensure the safety and convenience of the public and facilitate the race schedule, changes have been made to the routes of the OASA (Athens Public Transport Organization) and STASY (Athens Metro Operations Company) this morning. The first Metro service started at 05:00 a.m. instead of the usual 05:30 a.m.

  • Rizari Street: Closed between Vasilissis Sofias and Vasilissis Konstantinou Avenues.
  • Vasileos Georgiou II Avenue: Closed between Vasilissis Konstantinou Avenue and Rigillis Street.

Road Closures from 06:00 to 18:30:

  • Mesogeion Avenue: Between Katechaki Avenue and the Athens Tower, both directions closed.
  • Fidippidou Street: Closed between Michalakopoulou Street and Kifisias Avenue.
  • Thivon Avenue: Between Mikras Asias Street and Livadeias Street, towards Mesogeion Avenue.
  • Michalakopoulou Street: Between Ilisia Street and Mesogeion Avenue.
  • Kifisias Avenue: Between Panormou Street and Alexandras Avenue.
  • Alexandras Avenue: Between Panormou Street and Kifisias Avenue.
