Gaza: At least 30 Palestinians dead in Israeli strikes

Staff members at Kamal Adwan Hospital sustained minor burns after Israeli forces struck the third floor

Newsroom October 31 03:53

At least 30 Palestinians were killed in Israeli military strikes across various locations in the Gaza Strip today, primarily in the northern region, where an attack targeted a hospital, causing a fire in a medical supplies area and disrupting operations, according to Gaza health officials.

The Israeli army accused the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas of using the Kamal Adwan hospital in Beit Lahia for military purposes, stating that “dozens of terrorists” were hiding there. Health officials and Hamas deny this claim.

Northern Gaza, where Israel announced in January that it had dismantled Hamas’ military apparatus, is now the focal point of the military’s offensive in the enclave. Earlier this month, armored units were deployed to Jabalia, Beit Hanoun, and Beit Lahia to neutralize fighters reportedly regrouping in the area.

Eid Sabah, head of nursing at Kamal Adwan hospital in Beit Lahia, told Reuters that some staff members sustained minor burns after Israeli forces struck the hospital’s third floor. No fatalities were reported at the hospital, which Israeli forces raided and briefly occupied last week. Israel reported detaining approximately 100 suspected Hamas fighters in the raid.

The Health Ministry in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip called on all international organizations “to protect hospitals and medical staff from the brutality of (Israeli) occupation.”

The Israeli military stated its forces were operating in the hospital area based on intelligence on the presence of terrorists and terror infrastructure nearby. “During this operation, it was found that dozens of terrorists were hiding in the hospital, with some even posing as hospital staff,” the military said following today’s strike.

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) stated that one of its doctors, Mohammad Obeid, was detained by Israeli forces last Saturday. The organization called for his protection and that of all medical staff who “face extreme violence as they attempt to provide their services.”
