Moldovan police have revealed that pro-Russian fugitive businessman Ilan Shor transferred $39 million between September and October in an alleged attempt to bribe voters in both the presidential election and last Sunday’s referendum on Moldova’s European Union membership. Shor allegedly aimed to sway the vote against the EU accession by financially influencing voters.

Authorities had previously reported Russian interference in the election, which sought to undermine the pro-European faction. Shor was accused of attempting to bribe 130,000 voters, though both he and the Kremlin denied involvement.

Moscow condemned the referendum, questioning the slim majority of 50.46% in favor of EU membership and criticizing the process as unfair.
