Breast Cancer: Preventive Screening Can Save Your Life

Awareness Campaign by the Panhellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer "Alma Zois"

Newsroom October 8 01:15

In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Panhellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer, “Alma Zois,” is running its second annual #IAmInformed campaign.

The #IAmInformed campaign is an essential tool in raising awareness, reminding every woman that among the many daily check-ups in life, a breast cancer screening could save her life, the association emphasizes.

This year’s campaign will reach every corner of Greece through television, radio, public transportation, and the internet, encouraging all women to undergo preventive screenings and proudly say, “I Am Informed!”

Breast Cancer Facts:

  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives.
  • In 2022, 987 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in Greece.
  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in women in Europe.
  • Breast cancer deaths in Europe are decreasing due to early detection and more effective treatments.
  • Early diagnosis can increase five-year survival rates to as much as 97%.

Make Prevention a Priority

We know that when breast cancer is detected early, even before it can be felt or shows symptoms, it can have a better prognosis and more treatment options, with survival rates reaching up to 97% after diagnosis.

General Guidelines for Breast Cancer Screening:

Preventive breast cancer screenings include a clinical breast exam, breast ultrasound, and mammogram. Depending on your age, general medical guidelines recommend:

  • Clinical breast exams every three years for women aged 20 and above, and annually for women 40 and older.
  • A baseline mammogram between the ages of 35-40.
  • Annual mammograms from age 40 onwards.

However, every woman is unique. Regardless of age, it’s important to consult a breast health specialist to receive personalized advice, clarify any concerns, assess risk factors, and create a tailored screening plan.
