SYRIZA: Kasselakis Runs Again for Party Leader – “The Battle Will Be Within SYRIZA,” He Stated

Kasselakis returned to Athens from Spetses and held a series of meetings with SYRIZA MPs and officials in the morning - An emergency meeting of the party's Political Secretariat has been called to address the challenge of his dismissal by his supporters

Newsroom September 12 07:01

The Ethics, Statute Implementation, and Certification Committee (EDEKAP) of SYRIZA has decided to convene an emergency meeting of the party’s Political Secretariat today at 8:00 PM. The meeting will address the atmosphere of dissent regarding the decision of the Central Committee to remove Stefanos Kasselakis from his leadership role.

Reports indicate that the ousted president, Kasselakis, is already in Athens and is expected to announce his intention to run for party leader again later today. His close associates have conveyed that “the fight will be within SYRIZA.”

This morning, Kasselakis held a series of meetings with SYRIZA MPs and officials.

The emergency session of the Political Secretariat was called unexpectedly at 5:30 PM via text message, despite a previously scheduled meeting for next Tuesday.

Sources suggest that Kasselakis’ supporters plan to formally challenge the vote of no confidence at the upcoming Central Committee session on October 21-22, as they argue that the recent decision was unconstitutional.

The decision to dismiss Kasselakis was made during the September 7-8 Central Committee meeting, where a motion of no confidence was passed with 163 votes in favor, 120 against, and 2 abstentions out of 286 votes cast. The next steps include convening an extraordinary conference to elect a new party president.

Additionally, the party will be represented by Nikos Pappas at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), and the Political Secretariat is tasked with proposing the roadmap and potential topics for the extraordinary congress during the next Central Committee meeting.
