SYRIZA: Goodwill gesture toward Polakis with Linou’ expulsion by Kasselakis—All options open for the Chania MP

Following the promotion of Pappas and the dismissal of Famellos, Kasselakis attempts to reconnect with Polakis to consolidate control over the party

Newsroom August 28 04:08

There have been rapid developments within SYRIZA in the last 24 hours. While celebrating his wedding in Chania, Stefanos Kasselakis is seeing his influence within the party’s Parliamentary Group weaken after yesterday’s attempt to reshuffle positions via Zoom.

Facing opposition from the “87” group—whose power was reinforced, as demonstrated by the narrow majority supporting Nikos Pappas as the leader of the Parliamentary Group and the dismissal of Socrates Famellos—Kasselakis is now attempting to appease Pavlos Polakis to avoid a showdown at the Central Committee that could lead to a leadership election in the main opposition party. In this context, the expulsion of Athina Linou from SYRIZA’s Parliamentary Group is considered imminent, with only the formalities remaining.

Athina Linou to be Expelled from SYRIZA’s Parliamentary Group

The 459 pages of financial data from the Prolepsis Institute submitted by Athina Linou to the director of Kasselakis’ political office last Friday were deemed insufficient.

SYRIZA’s stance toward Athina Linou had been decided days ago, as the additional information requested did not address the issues raised.

It is worth noting that Athina Linou did not vote in favor of Stefanos Kasselakis’ proposal for Nikos Pappas to assume leadership of the Parliamentary Group.

This development seems to bring SYRIZA leader Stefanos Kasselakis closer to independent MP Pavlos Polakis, who had exposed Athina Linou’s case and called for her removal.

According to sources, Nikos Pappas, the new leader of the Parliamentary Group, will soon visit Parliament to inform the leadership about the party’s decision.

Polakis After Linos’ Expulsion: Vindication and a Lesson for Those Who Thought They Could Get Rid of Me

In a social media post, MP Pavlos Polakis expressed satisfaction after Athina Linou’s expulsion, calling it a “lesson” for “those who thought they could get rid of me… both inside and outside the party.” However, he also reiterated the need for “deep changes” within SYRIZA, leaving all options open.
