Mitsotakis Inspects Burned Areas in Penteli and begins Meeting at City Hall

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the fire-damaged closed gymnasium of the New Penteli Middle and High School, the Penteli Monastery, and the National Observatory of Athens before a meeting at the Penteli Municipal Office

Newsroom August 20 05:49

At the gym, he was welcomed by Infrastructure and Transport Minister Christos Staikouras, Penteli Mayor Natassa Kosmopoulou, and the school’s director. A representative from GEK Terna, responsible for the restoration, presented the reconstruction plan, expected to be completed in six months. Other school facilities in the area will be repaired by the start of the school year.

Mitsotakis, accompanied by the mayor, then visited Penteli Monastery, where he was greeted by the abbot. Outside the monastery, alongside Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vasilis Kikilias, he spoke with firefighters and volunteers stationed there. The Prime Minister also visited the National Observatory, where he was briefed on the observatory’s fire protection measures, which had protected the facility during the fires.

The meeting at Penteli started shortly after 5:30 PM and focused on findings from the inspections and recovery efforts in the fire-stricken areas of northeastern Attica. The meeting included ministers and local officials such as Environment and Energy Minister Theodoros Skylakakis, Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios, and Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias. From the Prime Minister’s office, Deputy Minister George Mylonakis, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, and State Minister Akis Skertsos attended.

The meeting aimed to assess the extent of the damage, review recovery measures, and establish a timeline for environmental restoration and state aid efforts. A discussion on additional protective measures for areas near forests was also on the agenda, given that many affected regions are practically within forested areas.
