Mitsotakis announced the extension of the affordable rural electricity program – Subsidies will only be granted to eligible recipients

The practices of multinational corporations that create issues in the pesticide market will not be tolerated, said the Prime Minister - Modernization of ELGA and OPEKEPE is necessary

Newsroom June 21 12:49

Addressing Multinational Practices and Modernizing Agencies

During a visit to the Ministry of Rural Development on Friday morning, Mitsotakis met with the new minister, Kostas Tsiaras. They discussed the necessary steps to address issues that have arisen recently and laid out a plan for moving forward.

Key Statements from the Meeting

In their statements after the meeting, Mitsotakis and Tsiaras highlighted the challenges facing the primary sector and stressed the need for swift action to find solutions.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis:

“Good luck to the new political leadership of the ministry. Over the past five years, significant progress has been made, which must continue and accelerate. We have proven our support for hardworking people by addressing production costs and meeting farmers’ fair demands. This includes the new mechanism for refunding the Excise Tax on oil and the program for cheaper electricity, which we will extend.”

“The leadership informed me of issues with multinational companies in the pesticide market. These practices will not be tolerated, and I will personally ensure this effort continues. The green transition will proceed quickly but without negatively impacting farmers. A significant challenge is investing in quality and international protection for the primary sector. We must support young farmers, ranchers, and fishermen. Modernizing ELGA and OPEKEPE is essential.”

Minister Kostas Tsiaras:

“The Prime Minister’s presence here demonstrates his immense interest in the primary sector. New challenges are emerging in addition to longstanding issues. We must act quickly to address them.”

Ensuring Fair Distribution of Subsidies

Mitsotakis concluded by stating, “It is a non-negotiable rule for the government that subsidies go only to those who are entitled to them. I am optimistic about the future of the primary sector.”

This visit and the announcements underline the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring fair practices and modernized systems to benefit those who work within it.
