Italy: Severe weather hits Veneto – State of emergency declared

The rushing waters have damaged courtyards and school ground floors, with no injuries reported

Newsroom May 16 11:00

After Milan, the capital of Lombardy, a violent wave of bad weather has hit the Veneto region in north-eastern Italy.

“Nobody expected such floods in mid-May, we are facing a terribly difficult situation,” said the Veneto regional governor, Luca Giaia.

In the city of Vicenza, the rushing waters damaged courtyards and school ground floors, with no injuries reported. In many rural areas of Veneto, schools remained closed today, as did municipal parks and sports centres.

As was the case in Milan, the use of special reservoirs has allowed the water level in a number of rivers to be reduced.

The Veneto region was, a short while ago, declared a state of emergency, using special funds to repair the damage.

As has been reported, in the last 24 hours, firefighters have carried out over seven hundred operations throughout northern Italy, particularly in Lombardy and Veneto.
