The Israeli airstrike targeted the Iranian consulate and the residence of the Iranian ambassador in Damascus on Monday afternoon, according to local media reports. The Iranian ambassador was not injured in the specific airstrike, according to the same sources.

At the same time, sources reported to Reuters that a building adjacent to the Iranian consulate was “hit” by the airstrike, resulting in the death of the senior commander of the Revolutionary Guards in Syria and Lebanon, Mohammad-Reza Zahedi, and five other individuals.

AFP correspondents on the scene confirmed that the building next to the embassy had been leveled, in an upscale neighborhood of Damascus.

Iranian media outlets, on their part, reported that “Hossein Akbari, the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Damascus, and his family were unharmed by the Israeli attack.”

The incident occurred a few days after the Observatory reported Israeli strikes that killed 53 people in Syria, including 38 soldiers and seven Hezbollah members supported by Iran.
