Shipowner Stathis Kouloukountis dies

In recent years he had health problems, mainly with his heart - He abandoned his beloved London and was spending long periods of his life in Syros

Newsroom February 27 05:51

Shipowner Stathis Kouloukountis has passed away at the age of 83, after serious health problems in recent years.

Born in New York in 1942, Stathis Kouloukountis grew up in a prosperous shipping dynasty.

He studied economics at the University of Pennsylvania.

After completing his studies, he started working in the London offices of the shipowning company Rethymnis & Kulukundis LTD, starting in the Operations department.

Competent, intelligent and with an intuition that rarely betrayed him, Stathis Kulukundis quickly took over responsibility for the financing and building of the group’s new ships.

In London he lived most of his life, while in the summers he visited Greece regularly for holidays, especially Syros, where he also maintained a residence.

He was a member of many international shipping organisations and in 1982 he was elected a member of the board of the Committee (the Greek Committee for Maritime Cooperation in London).

He served for more than ten years as its vice-chairman and was highly regarded in the City.

He was the brother of another shipowner, Elias Kuloukundis.

The latter mentions him in his autobiographical book ‘Untouchable Shores’, in which he vividly describes life within a shipping family, in this case theirs.
