Newsroom October 9 06:46

The commander of the Israeli army’s elite Ghost unit is one of 44 Israeli soldiers killed after a Hamas attack on Saturday morning.

The IDF announced that 44-year-old Colonel Roy Levy was killed in fighting with Hamas terrorists in the community of Reim near the Gaza border, an area where the music festival in which at least 260 people were killed was held.

According to the statement, Levy “led his team bravely, engaged the terrorists, and was the first to enter the battle in kibbutz Reim to rescue civilians who were stranded in their homes.”

Some 10 Palestinian terrorists were killed in the battle, according to the Israeli armed forces.

The Ghost unit – its official name is Unit 888 Refaim – was created in 2019 to conduct undercover reconnaissance operations for terrorists and Hamas infrastructure.

As the Daily Mail notes, it is an interagency unit that, among other things, uses drones and modern warfare tactics to stop Hamas.
