Greece reports the incident with the 92 naked migrants in Evros to the UN

"We have images and videos", said Notis Mitarakis who will see the president of the UNGA - "Turkey is in a difficult position"

Newsroom October 17 02:08

The Minister of Immigration and Asylum, Mr. Notis Mitarakis, harshly criticized Turkey for the shocking incident with the rescue of 92 migrants in Evros by the Greek authorities, who found them naked and abused.

Mr. Mitarakis pointed out that “yet another sad incident took place in Evros, with Turkey again exploiting immigrants, this time 92 people, who were found naked and injured in the Evros”.

Continuing, the Minister of Immigration and Asylum noted that he has requested and will see the president of the United Nations General Assembly next Monday and has already informed the UN and the European Commission. As he said, he will make a series of contacts and “I will show the photos, while we also have other material, such as videos”.

Frontex confirmed to AFP the arrival of the group of migrants under conditions that the Greek Ministry of Civil Protection described constituted an “inhuman picture”.

“Frontex officers reported that the migrants were found almost naked and some of them with visible injuries,” said Paulina Bakula, a spokeswoman for the organization. Bakula, according to AFP, speaking from Frontex headquarters in Warsaw, said Frontex officers had worked with Greek authorities to provide the migrants – mainly Afghans and Syrians – with immediate assistance. He added that the agency had notified the agency’s human rights officer of a possible rights violation.

In total, the Greek authorities rescued 92 illegal immigrants from the banks of the river Evros, who had been abandoned at the scene completely naked without even the slightest clothing.
