US Ambassador Pyatt: Greece is a crucial NATO ally

The US ambassador said he was pleased that the evacuation operation of the Greek people in Mariupol had started

Newsroom March 2 03:58

“Greece has been and remains a crucial NATO ally in strengthening the southeastern wing of the Alliance,” said the US Ambassador to Greece, Geoffrey R. Pyatt, in a statement today. “We reminded last week how important this service and capability is,” he added.

The US ambassador also said he was pleased that the evacuation operation of the Greek people in Mariupol had started, as well as that Greece was retaining its diplomatic mission.

Pyatt lauded his diplomatic colleagues from the Greek Foreign Ministry, the ambassador, the consul who remained in Mariupol, and all the Greek journalists who remained in the city “to record the violence that has taken place, including the Russian air raids in Sartana”, as he said.

The US ambassador made a special reference to Mariupol, stating that he is “particularly sensitive to the hundreds of years of Hellenistic identity that the city has”.

He continued by outlining last week as “extremely very painful for all of us, as we witnessed the horrific violence that Russia inflicted on the people of Ukraine through its premeditated invasion of a sovereign, democratic country.” He added: ” We are terrified by the images we have seen of Russian attacks on civilian areas in major European cities, such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Mariupol”, stressing: “We are encouraged by the resilience and sense of self-determination demonstrated by the Ukrainians.”

Finally, referring to yesterday’s speech by US President Joe Biden, he pointed out that the US will stand by the Ukrainians.
