Greek authorities brace for severe weather with constant meetings

The state has set up special Unified Coordination Centres to address possible problems

Newsroom December 10 01:24

The Greek state is preparing for the wave of severe weather that has descended upon the country, as repeated meetings were held at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection for the best coordination of all relevant bodies. In an effort to achieve more effective coordination of the Civil Protection forces, the authorities decided the operation of Unified Cooperation Centres in all the Regional Units are expected to be affected by the bad weather.

According to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, in a statement, during the meeting, “targeted local interventions to avoid floods” were decided, while similar issues concerning the wider areas of Etoloakarnania and Achaia were also discussed. At the same time, an overall assessment was made of the danger of specific points where, due to shortcomings, there is a possibility of flooding. In this context, local interventions were decided.

A number of bodies will participate in the Unified Coordination Centres including the Fire Brigade, the Greek Police, the Local Government. As the ministry emphasises, “the operation of these centres had been tested in the bad weather front “Ballos” and was deemed very efficient.

At the same time, the ministry, following the relevant forecasts, called on the citizens to be especially careful and to faithfully follow the following basic instructions:

– Avoid any unnecessary movement during severe weather conditions and secure your doors and windows tightly, always keeping in mind in case of torrents to move to the highest points of the house.

– Do not cross torrents, streams, or flooded roads, on foot or by car, for any reason, if you find yourselves in such circumstances.
