PM Samaras: SYRIZA undermines country and its future

Mr. Samaras final election campaign speech has concluded

Newsroom January 23 06:34

In his final pre-election campaign speech on Friday evening, incumbent Prime Minister Antonis Samaras accused main opposition SYRIZA of undermining the country and its future.

With polls showing SYRIZA’s lead over New Democracy consistent and even slightly increasing, the rally, which took place at an indoor stadium in coastal southern Athens, was considered as Samaras’ last chance to “tip the scales” in his party’s favor.

In beginning his address, Samaras stressed that the country is again caught in an awful storm.

Expressing certainly that New Democracy will emerge as the winner of Sunday’s election, the veteran politician said SYRIZA wants the country “to hold an umbrella when it’s raining growth in Europe.”

Specifically, he lashed out against the main opposition for refusing to recognize Greece’s commitments in the context of its bailout program and for saying “no” to liquidity.

With regard to his tenure as premier of the country, Samaras noted that all his efforts in the last 2.5 years were aimed at giving the Greek youth something to hope for. Making specific reference to the positive economic developments in the country in the last two years, the PM warned that the Greeks are now in danger of losing everything, as the “arrogant”  SYRIZA wants to pursue more loans for the country.

Samaras reiterated New Democracy’s commitment for the gradual reduction of ENFIA starting from 2015. Moreover, he said that SYRIZA’s promises for the abolition of ENFIA property tax are like “sharp blades disguised as words of hope,” as the new taxes proposed by the main opposition will in fact increase the burden of the middle class.

Noting that, in the last two years, the government has managed to improve Greece’s relations with several countries, including the US, China, Russia, Egypt and Israel and win their trust, the PM warned that SYRIZA will be unable to promote the geopolitical advantages of the country without help from these powers.
